Embassy Statement on the JKIA Fire Accident

The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya wishes to inform well-wishers and the general public that a fire accident that occurred at the "Arrivals Terminal" of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday the 7th August, 2013 at about 05:00Hrs local time was successfully contained by 09:00hrs local time by the airport's emergency services. Despite the damage to the arrivals terminal and destruction of property of unknown value, there were no casualties reported. The airport has since been temporarily closed and scheduled flights are being re-routed to other international airports around the country including, Mombasa Airport, Eldoret Airport and Kisumu Airport.

In the wake of the accident the Government has initiated investigations to establish the cause of the fire as well as assess the extent of the damage. Security has also been tightened around the airport but local flights and cargo operations have since resumed normal operations. All visitors to Kenya are kindly urged to understand the situation and to bear with the authorities who are working around the clock to ensure that normal operations resume as soon as possible.
