STUDY TOUR BY TOKYO BASED DIPLOMATIC CORPS TO IWAKI CITY, FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE ON THURSDAY, 8TH JUNE 2017.

Site Tour of Onahama Fish Market

On 8th June,2017, The Mission was part of the delegation of Tokyo based Embassies that participated in a study tour organized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to Iwaki city, Fukushima Prefecture. The Mission was represented by Paul Kaliih, Minister Counselor.

Fukushima Prefecture was at the epicenter of March 2011, Great East Japan earthquake (9.1 magnitude), followed by a Tsunami that caused over 15,000 deaths, injured many, misplaced over 220,000 within Honshu Island, destroyed buildings and infrastructure and caused accidents to three Nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture.

During the tour Participants, were taken around the Onahama Fish Market and Fish radio- active testing Laboratories in order to appreciate its advanced sanitary/Hygiene testing technology on Fish and sea products. The delegation witnessed the great recovery by the local fish market since the 2011 earthquake/nuclear accident disaster. The delegation was thereafter hosted for a Luncheon, served with local fish and sea food by MoFA. The luncheon was also addressed by Mayor of Iwaki city Mr. Toshio Shimizu.

Later in the Afternoon, the delegation made a site visit to Coal- powered Nakoso Power station owned by Joban Joint Power Co.Ltd. During the site visit and a workshop on clean coal technology, conducted within the power station premises, , the company engineers further demonstrated their advanced IGCC technology that produces clean Coal and captures Co2 that reduces emission of Green House Gas to the atmosphere for sustainable and climate change friendly clean coal - power generation.
