Universal Health Coverage Forum (UHC) 2017 was held at Tokyo Prince Hotel, Japan from 12th to 15th December 2017. It was co-organized by the Government of Japan, JICA, the World Bank Group, WHO, UNICEF and the International Health Partnership for UHC 2030. Major health care based International organizations, Foundations and Financial institutions and the Civil Society organizations and country representatives, including High-level representatives also participated in the Forum. The high – level opening Session was addressed by H.E. Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General,Macky Sall,President of Senegal,Htin Kyaw, President of Mymmar, Bill Gates,Co-Chair,Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation(BMGF), Jim Yong Kim,President of World Bank Group,Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,Director-Genral, WHO, Antony Lakes, Executuve Director, UNICEF, Shinichi Kitaoka, President,JICA and Yoshitake Yokokura, President,World Medical Association(WMA). The climax of the session was announcement by H.E.Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan of his Government’s new commitment of US$2.9 Billion in support of Global UHC in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal, 2030, No.4 that commits countries of the world to ensure that no one is left behind in terms of ensuring that, irrespective of one’s location, circumstances, all citizens of the world by the year 2030, should be able to access,made available and affordable to quality health care without suffering any financial hardship. Various side events organized by various Health based organizations with Country presentations were also held during the three days’ UHC Forum.
The Kenyan Delegation was led by Hon.Dr.Cleopa Mailu while the Mission was represented by Paul Kaliih. On the sidelines of the Forum, the Cabinet secretary also held bilateral meetings with his Japanese counter, Hon. Katsunobu Kato, Minister for Health, Labor and Welfare and JICA Senior Vice-President. The meeting was also attended by Ms.Keiko Sano, Chief Representative for Kenya and Paul Kaliih, Minister Counselor. The Cabinet secretary concluded his official visit to Japan by holding discussions with Mr. Takao Suzuki, M.D, Chairman, Tokushukai Association at their HQs in Tokyo.
